Arthur “ Art” Chapman Obituary

Arthur David Chapman was born on June 18, 1938, the son of John Oak and Irene Helen (Dorr) Chapman, in Eagle Grove, Iowa.  He graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1956 and went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. Art married Helen Sunner in 1959 and to this union three children were born, Lorrie, David, and Christopher.  They later divorced.  On June 6, 1980, Art married Mary Garbier at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove.  To this union a daughter, Elizabeth, was born.

Upon graduation from college, Art worked for the family business, Chapman Oil Company, and later worked for Home Appliance. He then completed his career as a top district sales manager for Northrup King Seeds. If you knew Art, you could see him wearing his Northrup King hat most days of the week, even after retirement.

Art was an avid sports fan and could be found watching the Hawks at his home or at a Hawkeye tailgate in Iowa City. In addition to sports, some of his best memories were spent fishing, hunting, gardening, and golfing. Mary’s cooking and eating chocolate were two of his favorite things. However, his greatest joy was his family. He truly was a family man who spoke with each of his children on a daily basis. Art cherished the many friendships that developed throughout the years in Eagle Grove.  Art was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Art is survived by his children: David Chapman (Angela) of Charles City, IA, Christopher Chapman (Rosita) of Henderson, NV and Elizabeth Sheiner (Chad) of Arvada, CO; son-in-law, Robert Wallentine Jr. of Wichita, KS; grandchildren: Rita Becker (Peter), Jacob Wallentine (Kylee), Jonathan Chapman, Joshua Wallentine (Madeline) and Roman and Ari Sheiner; great-grandchildren, Montgomery and Evelyn Becker; brothers, Jerry Chapman (Jan) of Rogers, MN, and Rich Chapman (Mary) of Billings, MT and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends.  He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary; daughter, Lorrie Wallentine; and brother, G. James Chapman.

Art passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at age 81 on September 27, 2019. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. with a Rosary and Vigil services at 4:15 P.M. at Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove, IA.  Celebration of his life and Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Father Jerry Blake on Thursday, October 3, 2019 at 10:30 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove, IA.  Art will be buried at the Calvary Cemetery, Eagle Grove, IA.
