Kevin "Bear" Michael Phillips

      Kevin “Bear” Michael Phillips, the son of Paul and Gloria (Kern) Phillips, was born on November 11, 1952, Waterloo, Iowa.  The family moved to Eagle Grove when he was a young child.  Bear graduated from Eagle Grove High School – “Class of 1971”.  He then attended ICCC in Fort Dodge and earned his degree in Auto Mechanics. 

      After graduation, Kevin worked as a diesel mechanic for Umthun Trucking.  He also delivered feed in 5 states for M&M Livestock and worked as a mechanic for the City of Eagle Grove for 23 years – and he continued to work part-time.

      On August 8, 1987, Kevin was united in marriage with Mary Catherine Lieb, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove. 

      Kevin was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and served as the church’s groundskeeper for the last 20 years.  He was also an Eagle Scout and formerly served on the Eagle Grove Fire Department.   Bear loved all animals, gardening, the outdoors, collecting “old things”, history, reading magazines (and not ever getting rid of them) and he was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. 

       Kevin passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 7, 2020, at the age of 67 years.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his father and mother-in-law, Cletus and Eunice Lieb and brother-in-law, Richard Lieb.

       Kevin is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mary; brother, Craig Phillips (Pam) of Pocahontas; step-mother, Mae Phillips of Fort Dodge; step-brothers, Jim Seko (Diane) of Lincoln, NE and Stephan Seko (Karen) of Downer Groves, IL; brother-in-law, Dean Lieb (Pat) of Pocahontas; sisters-in-law, Joan Wilber (Jack) of Sarasota, FL, Dorothy Latimer of Pocahontas and Judy Peterson (Brian) of St. Cloud, MN; nephews, Josh Phillips (Jenna) and their sons, William and John and Jacob Phillips (Mahala) and their daughters, Layla, Piper and Sawyer and many more nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

     Visitation will be Tuesday, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a Vigil service at 3:30 p.m. at Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove.  A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Jerry Blake, celebrating.  Burial in Calvary Cemetery.

    Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
