Marlys Joann (Shepherd) Tookey

      Marlys Tookey, 81, passed away on Saturday, December 7, 2019, at her home. 

      Marlys Joann (Shepherd) Tookey, the daughter of Horace and Claribel (Roepke) Shepherd, was born on March 12, 1938, in Hazelton, Iowa.    She was raised and educated in Oelwein.

      In 1954, Marlys married Raymond Carlson, they had 7 children and lived in Washburn, Iowa.  After 20 years, they divorced.  She married Bernie Hoelscher and was widowed in 1976.  On September 1, 1979, Marlys married Vincent Tookey in Nashua, Iowa and enjoyed 40 years of marriage.  They lived in Eagle Grove until moving to Fort Dodge in March of 2019 to be near family. 

      Marlys worked as a social worker in Humboldt County and as a pre-school teacher at Eagle’s Wings in Eagle Grove. 

      Marlys enjoyed gardening, cooking, canning, raising chickens and listening to country music.   Family was the most important thing to Marlys and she dearly loved all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with all her heart.

      Marlys was preceded in death by her parents; son, Elmer Carlson; daughter and son-in-law, Joann and Frank Teel; grandsons, Jacob Thompson and Shaun Teel; granddaughter, Carrie Aageson and brothers, Ray, John, Phil and Rick Clendenen.

     Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Vince; children: Ray Dale Carlson (Renae), Michael Carlson (Michelle), Jeannette Spencer (Kevin), John Carlson (Jennifer), Lora Thompson (Ron),  Barry Tookey (Teresa) and Lance Tookey (Roberta); 67 grand and great-grandchildren sisters, Carlyn Juhl and Sherry Zingg; brother, Larry Shepherd and her fur babies, Buddy and Gunnar.

     Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 11, 2019, at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove.  Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the church.  Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.

     Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
