Merril L. Rasmussen

       Merril Lee Rasmussen the son of Eldon and Edna (Lindhart) Rasmussen was born on the family farm in Goldfield, Iowa on October 5, 1935.   He was raised and educated in the area of his birth and graduated in 1953.  He then attended Eagle Grove Junior College and the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy.

       On June 16, 1955, Merril was united in marriage with Jane Bartley in Goldfield. They made their home on the farm in Goldfield.  Jane preceded him in death on June1, 2009.

       Merril was involved in law enforcement for 43 years – starting as an officer and promoted Assistant Chief of Police in Goldfield, then working for Wright County Sheriff’s Department as reserve Deputy, promoted to a Deputy and finally serving as Sheriff in 2000.  He served as Range Master and Firearms Instructor – issuing gun permits. He served in the National Guard Army Reserve with the Red Bulls.

      Merril was a member of the Goldfield United Presbyterian Church and the American Radio Relay League.  He was also a member of the National Sheriff’s Association.  He loved his horses and collecting and repairing guns.

      Merril passed away on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at the age of 87 years.  He was also preceded in death by his parents; brother, Wayne Rasmussen; sister, Elaine Norris (Bob) and great grandson, Dakota Rasmussen (son of Dylan).

       Merril is survived by his son, Rod Rasmussen (Sylvia) of Goldfield; grandchildren, Karyssa Boquet (Tyler) of Louisiana, Dylan Rasmussen of Laurens, Steven Rasmussen of Colorado and Michael Rasmussen of California; great grandson, Caleb Rasmussen and sister-in-law, Charlotte Rasmussen of Eagle Grove.

      A Celebration of life will be held on Friday April 28th, 2023, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Legion Hall in Goldfield Iowa.

      Private family Committal services will be held.

      Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
