Michael Lloyd Olmstead was born on June 5, 1954 to Harold Olmstead and Dolores Olmstead in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He grew up in Eagle Grove and Graduated from EGHS. After attending Iowa Central Community College, he took classes at the University of Indiana and then finished his associate degree in Mental Health Counseling in Maryland.
He worked for the Maryland State Mental Hospital in Baltimore for several years before leaving the field. He began a career in advertising sales for publications. This led him to jobs near Washington D.C., in Louisville, Kentucky, Lincoln, Nebraska, and eventually home to Iowa.
Mike met his best friend and the love of his life, Lori, while working at Heartland Communications in Fort Dodge. They married on April 9, 1994. They continued to work together at different places for several years before Mike moved to Arnold Motor Supply in 2009. Mike worked there until his health forced his retirement this summer.
Mike had many passions in life starting with his Lord, his family, music, woodworking, and fishing. He loved serving in his church and did so in many capacities including youth and children’s ministries, but his favorite was being part of the worship team.
He had an amazing musical talent which he started using at a young age performing in a band with his father. As a young man he was lead guitar and singer in the band Star Hawk. He especially loved it when he was able to use those talents for praise and worship. He also played and sang for school musicals and Paddlewheel Players productions.
Mike loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed taking road trips with Lori, target shooting with his son Josh, and having movie marathons with his daughter Steph. Mike’s compassion often extended his family to include others, most notably his “sons” Shannon and Cyprian.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Lori; his children, Stephanie Olmstead, and Josh Olmstead; his sister, Brenda Olmstead; nephew, Travis Truckenbrod; niece, Caitlyn Truckenbrod; other family members, Jennifer Olmstead, Michael R. Olmstead and 5 grandchildren; “sons”, Shannon Gearheart and Cyprian Spzak, and many, many other family and friends.
